On International Criminal Justice Day, global attention focuses on the urgent need for states to commit fully to justice for victims of serious crimes. The International Bar Association’s ICC & ICL Programme emphasizes strong support for the Rome Statute system, the foundation of the International Criminal Court (ICC), designed to hold perpetrators accountable and protect victims.
The Rome Statute has been a critical legal framework in prosecuting war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. However, challenges remain as not all states have ratified or fully implemented its provisions, limiting the reach of international justice.
The IBA calls on governments worldwide to:
- Strengthen cooperation
- Enhance legal frameworks
- Ensure victims receive recognition, reparations, and protection
By doing so, the global community can work toward ending impunity and fostering peace and accountability.
International Criminal Justice Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address grave international crimes and bring justice to victims who often face immense suffering and marginalization.
