A new TikTok video uploaded recently has gone viral after it captured something very unusual—a car door opening by itself. The video was posted by a businesswoman based in Houston who typically uploads content regarding her stationery business. However, this time around, she uploaded something else. The brief video, uploaded on April 30, has already garnered over 3.4 million views.
In the video, the audience is shown a close-up of a parked vehicle. The vehicle appears to be vacant, but then the interior lock shifts and the door opens by itself.
No people are seen inside, and the video doesn’t give any explanation about what caused it. The TikTok caption reads, “Be right back, just hanging out with my [ghost] neighbor.” While the video fascinated many, the creator chose to turn off the comments section, leaving people to wonder in silence.
Ghost stories and paranormal activity have fascinated human beings for centuries. From novels and films to ghost tours of haunted mansions and ghost expeditions, these inexplicable occurrences continue to attract inquiring minds.Notorious cases, like the Enfield Poltergeist in 1977 when two young girls claimed to float in mid-air and witnessed objects levitate on their own, have left lasting impressions on the public.
So why would some believe that ghosts exist and others not?
Dr. Frank McAndrew, a psychologist who wrote on this in Psychology Today, says that it is due to how individuals think. He indicates that the “cognitive style” of a person, in other words, how they think, can leave them more or less open to accepting supernatural things.
Dr. McAndrew describes cognitive style as distinct from intelligence. Intelligent people can be ghost believers, depending on their mode of thinking. Some people use an intuitive style of thinking, where they ponder more over feelings and gut feelings. Others use an analytical style, where they ponder over facts and logic. Intuitive thinkers are more likely to believe in paranormal phenomena.
Although this TikTok clip might never be accounted for, it’s a great illustration of how mysterious things can get our attention. Whether it’s an actual ghost or merely a car malfunction, one thing is certain—humans are naturally attracted to mystery, particularly when there are no definitive answers.
