
Las Cruces, N.M.:
Police have arrested four suspects in connection with Friday’s mass shooting at Young Park, which left three people dead and at least 15 others injured. The suspects include 20-year-old Tomas Rivas, two 17-year-old boys, and a 15-year-old, all of whom face three open counts of murder, according to Las Cruces Police. Additional charges are pending.
Authorities identified the deceased victims as Andrew Madrid, 16, and Jason Gomez, 13, who died at the scene, and Dominick Estrada, 19, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The injured victims, aged 16 to 36, included nine men and six women. Their names have not been publicly released.
The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. local time at Young Park, a music and recreation venue where approximately 200 people were present. Multiple firearms were involved, and police recovered 50-60 bullet casings from the scene. Several victims were caught in the crossfire.
Gunshot victims were transported to local hospitals, including Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces and the University Medical Center of El Paso. According to officials, six patients arrived at Memorial Medical Center, seven later transferred to El Paso. As of Saturday, four had been treated and released.
Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo expressed grief over the incident, stating, “Honestly, nowadays a tragedy like this feels like a nightmare just waiting to come true.”
Las Cruces sits along the Rio Grande River in southern New Mexico, about 41 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The investigation is being assisted by the New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Young Park and surrounding roadways remain temporarily closed as authorities continue their investigation.
