On International Criminal Justice Day, the International Bar Association’s ICC & ICL Programme emphasized the urgent need for states worldwide to reinforce their dedication to justice for victims of international crimes. This day is dedicated to honoring victims and bolstering support for the Rome Statute system, which plays a pivotal role in prosecuting grave offenses such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
The Rome Statute created the International Criminal Court (ICC), with the mission to hold perpetrators accountable and provide victims with a platform to pursue justice. Despite notable progress, many states remain hesitant to fully commit to this system, thereby undermining global efforts to secure justice and prevent impunity.
The IBA’s ICC & ICL Programme has called on governments to:
- Enhance cooperation with the ICC,
- Implement legal frameworks that align with the Rome Statute, and
- Support victims’ rights actively.
They highlighted that justice is fundamental for peace and reconciliation within affected communities.
As countries observe International Criminal Justice Day, the core message remains: stronger state commitments are vital to uphold international law and deliver justice to those harmed by the most serious crimes.
