When the clear failings of the system in protecting children and preventing these heinous crimes are laid bare. Nothing shows how lax the welfare of children is, and how poorly they are protected from exploitation, as when there is a school hostel where a child could be abducted and murdered.
The second attempt to cover up what had been happening at the school – the first was to say the child was sick – speaks to the lack of accountability with institutions, and the lack of transparency and responsibility for institutions to protect children.
Furthermore, the incident uncovered serious deficiencies in mental health support for children and it highlighted the need for strict legislation to prevent people taking advantage of superstitions.
There is a lot to be said about the role the media play in reporting. It is disappointing to think that although one or two outlets, such as the Irish Times, published factual reports on the incidents, others went to town reporting the occult angle, which did nothing but feed the public’s fear and reflect badly on children and the people in their lives who knew this was happening.
Journalistic integrity did not apply in this case, and children deserve more sensitive reporting that accurately captures their tragedy.
